External Wall Installation

External wall insulation is a great alternative when looking to improve the insulation of a building, reducing heat loss and improving the buildings EPC rating.

Buildings that have been constructed prior to the 1930s are generally built with solid walls, meaning there are no cavities that can be filled with insulation. Therefore, in order to improve the insulating properties of the building, insulation must be fitted on the exterior or interior of the walls – installing insulation on the interior would decrease the usable space and room sizes as well as having the big job of plastering, removing radiators and generally causing massive disruption to properties and there tenants especially when working on domestic projects, so is generally not an ideal solution for many home owners.

External Wall Installation Process

The System of External Wall Insulation

EWI usually comes in 30/50/70/90mm EPC boards. The boards attached are expanded polystyrene, which are rigid and provide excellent thermal insulation. The process starts by fixing the boards to the wall using adhesive and then mechanically fixing the boards to the walls using the correct size and type of fixings depending on the substrate the boards are being fixed on to. It is then followed by a choice of systems including brick & silicone systems which consists of a 2 layer base coat and a reinforcing mesh, this is then premiered and silicone topped which comes in over 1000+ colours or has a brick finish depending on which system you choose.

Benefits of an External Wall Insulation system

  • Helps to save on ever increasing energy bills, keeps the home warmer for longer.

  • Improves your properties energy efficiency rating (EPC rating). By increasing EPC rating this tends to increase the value of your property. If you are a land lord it can also help increase rental appeal as it brings down running costs, therefore increasing the price you can charge for rent for your property.

  • Redcuces carbon footprint.

  • Helps to protect old damaged brick/stone work which can sometimes be dangerous or hard to repair.

  • Helps to maintain the building temperature, whether that be keep it warm or keep it cool in the summer.

  • Reduces external noise, working the same way as double glazing glass does.

  • Aids in minimizing the likelihood of condensation and damp. By applying external insulation to the walls, heat is retained inside, resulting in a rise in the temperature of the inner walls. Since moisture tends to gather on cold surfaces, this approach significantly decreases the chance of condensation occurring.

  • Improves aesthetics to old damage substrates.

  • Increases value to properties which currently have low EPC ratings. By installing an EWI system you are increasing your EPC rating which reflects in the value of your property.
